It was Spider Woman who preserved the Dine (Navajo) people from the evils that surrounded them when they emerged into the Third-World. For this reason she became one of their most cherished Gods. It was also Spider Women who taught the Dine to weave. Spider Women told the Dine ancestors of the first weaving loom constructed by her husband. He made the cross poles of sky and earth cords; the warp sticks of sun rays, lengthwise to cross the woof; the healds of rock crystal and sheet lightning, to maintain the condition of the fibers. For the batten he choose a sun halo to seal the joints, and a comb of white shell to clean the strands.

This beautiful large rug was woven by the great Navajo weaver LUCILLE BEGAY. Lucille is a life-long weaver from the Cedar Ridge area of the Navajo Nation. We started buying her weavings over 30 years ago. Lucille comes from a long line of weavers, she is unique in that she has never married and has dedicated her life to weaving great rugs. We also have several rugs in our collection woven by her sister Ruby. This weaving measures 44X66 inches. Lucille has wove 4 natural colors into this rug. She used her personal STORM PATTERN when weaving this rug and has wove her SPIRIT LINE into the weaving. I have included a close up photo of the SPIRIT LINE.

I do not have a photo of Lucille with this rug, but I have included a photo here of Lucille holding an almost identical weaving. Lucille is the traditional Navajo lady on the right. Helping her hold the rug is her sister Ruby, also a great weaver.I can furnish a warp/weft count for this weaving via email request.
